The Coachella 2008 lineup has been announced. The music festival runs from Friday, April 25th through Sunday, April 27th. Saturday looks to be the standout day for me the venerable Portishead is headlining (with a new album due out in April). Other Saturday notables for me are Cold War Kids, Rilo Kiley, and Cinematic Orchestra. Friday looks pretty good too with Stars, The Raconteurs, and Tegan & Sara (fuck Jack Johnson headlining though), however Sunday is a wasteland with a few small exceptions like Sia and Metric.

Tickets are $90 per day, available Friday, January 25th.

Reason #138 that I wish I still lived in NYC:

The Kronos Quartet are playing a concert in February where they will perform Clint Mansell’s Requiem for a Dream suite.

The Coachella 2007 lineup is out.

Looks pretty damn great (Saturday especially). I really wish I could go this year (though three days in a row might be pretty exhausting).

Over on Good Hodgkins there’s a very interesting essay on The Garden State Effect, which descibes and investigates the problems of bands emerging in popularity beyond their indie roots.

I just want to be able to see my favorite bands without some inebriated douchebag loudly & violently humping the monitor speakers during quiet songs in a cloud of his own cologne.

The article really hit home with me because it describes a trend that I’ve observed over and over with artists like Maroon 5, Guster, Zero 7 and Thievery Corperation (the last two thanks to Garden State itself). This part really rang true for me:

When I say that I want as many people as possible to like my favorite bands, what I actually mean is that I want as many people as possible to like my favorite bands for the right reasons.
