Loads of good stuff announced today for the iPhone OS 3.0. Engadget has the details.

Apple is, unsurprisingly, not going to stand still and let Google Android and Palm WebOS get the upper hand on features. They pretty much went down the wish list of features for the update and checked of every one of them: copy/paste, push notifications, better Bluetooth support, and so on. Pretty much the only feature left out is background apps which Apple again dissed as a large source of battery drain.

Flash is also still a no-show, but that’s not a surprise, nor something I think Apple plans on addressing anytime soon. In any case, I still don’t think Flash would be any good on any phone device at this time.

Consumers get it this summer… I can’t wait.

My new favorite ‘Get a Mac‘ ad: Security. It mocks Vista’s overzealous security controls.

It reminded me of this old series of screenshots showing the seven steps required to delete a desktop shortcut in Vista. To be fair, these pics were taken when Vista was still in beta & I had hoped (yes, I’d actually like Vista to be pretty good) that they would fix this issue in the retail release. Apparently they stuck with the “confirm everything” method of security, which just sucks all around.

Update (2/6/08): More on this security from this post by Jeff Atwood (thanks to Andrew Escobar for the link):

The problem with the Security Through Endless Warning Dialogs school of thought is that it doesn’t work. All those earnest warning dialogs eventually blend together into a giant “click here to get work done” button that nobody bothers to read any more. The operating system cries wolf so much that when a real wolf– in the form of a virus or malware– rolls around, you’ll mindlessly allow it access to whatever it wants, just out of habit.

I totally agree with that. Mac OS X does a really good job of only putting up warnings when they are expected and needed, it would seem that in Vista that’s not the case.

Well, the Zune launched a couple of weeks back, and, unlike the PS3 or Wii, I don’t think we’ll be seeing much of a shortage of these bricks…

There’s been some absolutely wonderful and comprehensive coverage of the Zune out there (in addition to the stories that end up sounding like iPod ads) but so far what’s struck me the most about the Zune is it’s filthy sexual undertones:

First, Mirosoft CEO Steve “Monkeyboy” Ballmer described sharing content between two Zunes like this:

I want to squirt you a picture of my kids. You want to squirt me back a video of your vacation. That’s a software experience.

Steve, I’ve got to say that really sounds more like some kind of frathouse sexcapade where you end up with an infection on your genitals.

Then came the Zune software install screen, which seems to feature two girls making out while another one yells out in orgasm. Or maybe she’s in pain? It’s really not clear.

The best sexual connotation for the Zune unfortunately doesn’t come from Microsoft, but it’s so wonderfully dirty it doesn’t matter. Crazy Apple Rumors Site commenter Rip Ragged wrote this technology pr0n:

…her warm, moist vista engulfed my turgid Zune. “Ubuntu, ubuntu,” she repeated as she climbed from a husky whisper to a shrieking, wildly bucking crescendo, “UBUNTU, UBUNTU.”

I collapsed in her arms and murmured into her ear, “Welcome to the social.”

Okay, so you probably be a huge nerd to appreciate that one, but I can’t wipe the grin off my face so it’s staying up.

Today I learned that I suffer from Brevismaysphobia. It’s not a debilitating condition thankfully and I think I’ll be able to work around it for the rest of my life. However I just wanted to let everyone out there know about it so that we can all spread the word about this condition. My wish is that, if we work together, someday our children will be able to live in a world where the fear of baby corn does not menace the peoples of this earth.

Tycho, from Penny Arcade (I was going to explain it but then I realized: you either know it or you don’t) recently purchased a new Core Duo iMac. Here’s a snippet from his post about his experiences from the first week:

What I have ascertained is not that PCs as we know them lack good design, but that PCs as we know them have hardly any design to speak of. I’m not trying to be insulting. Use a Mac for a week, and we’ll talk again.

[...]

[The Mac] is extremely good at what it does, which is to say, exposing functionality.

Be sure to check out the rest of the post and the comic for some more intriguing (and humorous) insights.

I love to hear these kinds of things, especially from technologically savvy users, because it helps me keep that smug look on my face…

Update (3/6/05): New posts and comic with more on the Mac.

I dealt with Performas while behind the bar but this takes it to a new level?

I dealt with Performas while behind the bar but this takes it to a new level. Found this on TUAW, but I like Engadget’s synopsis:

Far be it from us to ridicule folks who desperately cling to ancient technology, hoping against hope it will serve their current needs… nevermind, let’s ridicule them. This pic was apparently snapped at the Genius Bar of an Apple Store, where the customer had brought in a Mac SE, circa 1988, asking for upgrade recommendations. The guy had apparently been using the machine, which runs at a blazing 8MHz (and this time that’s not a typo!), for his banking and for some bizarre reason he decided it was time to look into something a little beefier. Given that the Genius actually appears to be checking the machine out, rather than smirking knowingly and recommending that the customer turn it into a fish tank, we think there’s a good chance he told him to upgrade the RAM (the SE can handle a whopping 4MB) and sent him home. And then smirked knowingly to his fellow Geniuses.

I know I couldn’t have held back the smirk unil the guy left: I would have had to take a break in the AppleCare room and yell.
