I found this Onion A.V. Club discussion on Is Hip-hop Relevant To Middle-Aged White Guys? fascinating.

Though I’m not middle aged yet, my general opinion of the hip-hop genera are mostly in line with Noel’s perspective in the debate: I like Jurassic 5 (except their new album; they’re really hurting without Cut Chemist) and the Beastie Boys (though I detest Eminem) and I’m extremely turned off by the misogyny and materialism in hip-hop.

All that aside, there’s nothing in the debate that made me want to go discover some new hip-hop for myself. Hip-hop isn’t a phase I went though in college (I try to avoid ‘phases’ in general because they’re always embarrassing when it’s over); I just don’t see any reason to be interested in it beyond what I already enjoy.
